Onya Innovations UK, Entrepreneur Who Succeeded in the Face of Adversity
L-R Adrienne Lawler, Daniel Brousson,Pier Paolo Mucelli (eOffice)

Judges’ Comments: Onya Innovations have developed a family of unique and cleverly designed bags that have been launched as a user-friendly solution to the problems caused by plastic bags.  Initially sold in markets, the bags are now sold internationally to both consumers and retail outlets.  Started with just under £4,000 borrowed from family, Onya is already profitable and has expanded internationally.

Onya was started shortly after founder, Daniel Brousson’s wife had tragically passed away from cancer at the age of just 34.  With two young children under the age of 5, Daniel had already had to give up work to care for both wife and children and had accumulated sizeable debts due to expensive treatments for Wendy.  Determined to develop an idea that would allow him to look after his children both emotionally and financially, he founded Onya in May 2005.  Just 2 years later the bags are now stocked in over 140 outlets across the UK with turnover already exceeding £200,000 and with year 3 expected to treble initial expectations.

The bags are also being adopted by some local councils to help raise the importance of environmental issues. The business has allowed Daniel to clear all his debts and through being home based he has also been able to support his two children through a very difficult period of time.
